One of the premier Western art events in the world, Night of Artists includes the viewing and sale of nearly 300 new works of painting, sculpture and mixed media by more than 80 of today’s leading contemporary Western artists.
Night of Artists was created to celebrate Western art and the Briscoe would not exist without the artistic seeds that Night of Artists planted. The effort and funds to establish the museum grew from Night of Artists, making it a vital piece of the museum’s history as well as its signature annual event. Night of Artists serves as the primary fundraiser for the museum, benefiting the Briscoe’s full array of exhibitions, engagement, and educational programs throughout the year.

Families are invited to learn about a form of art called a mandala. After a short presentation, participants will go on a short nature walk in the McNutt Sculpture Garden where we will search for and collect interesting nature objects. We will use those objects to create a mandala and take a digital photograph of our work of art.
“Full STEAM Ahead” allows learners of all ages to work together and learn about the American West by engaging in hands-on STEAM learning experiences. Sharing the American West through STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics – each activity ties back to the Briscoe’s art and artifacts, bringing the West to life in a new way.

Mothers and their children (5 years or older) will enjoy a painting session led by energetic and charismatic international artist Gio DiZurita. Based in San Antonio, Dizurita tells stories through her art, an everlasting transformation of life experiences. She’ll lead everyone in a creative and fun family painting adventure to create a hummingbird in acrylic on an 11 x 14 canvas. Like mothers, hummingbirds are known for their intelligence, beauty, devotion, and love. DiZurita notes, “These little birds are also respected as fierce fighters and defenders of their territory,” making the hummingbird the perfect subject for Mother’s Day.
There will be two sessions, one morning session from 10 am – noon, and one afternoon session from 2 – 4 pm.
Tickets are $45, or $35 for members of the museum. Registration is one per family and includes all supplies. The class size is limited, so register today to ensure your spot! CLICK HERE to register.

A significant force in contemporary art in the Southwest from the early 1970s until her death in 1991, gallery director and art dealer Elaine Horwitch was instrumental in bringing experimental styles such as pop art, minimalism and conceptual art to the Southwest, launching the careers of hundreds of artists from the region. With galleries in Scottsdale, Santa Fe, Sedona, and Palm Springs, she was a leader in fostering what has been called “new Western art” or “Southwest pop.”

Join us for a conversation with Southwest Rising curator Dr. Julie Sasse, Chief Curator at the Tucson Museum of Art, Lisa Sherman Wade, art writer, critic and widow of Southwest Rising artist Bob “Daddy-O” Wade, and Southwest Rising artist Brian Blount.
Many of Elaine Horwitch’s key artists entertained Horwitch and her clients with their bold personalities, exciting new images, and ability to attract collectors, museums, and the press alike. Sasse worked as Horwitch’s gallery director for 14 years, Wade was a noted art critic who wrote for regional and national magazines about the top artists in New Mexico in the 1980s, and Blount was one of the artists Horwitch featured in her galleries. They will share some of the legendary stories about Horwitch and her galleries while reflecting on the art scene in the Southwest on the cusp of exciting new changes. Wade will also share stories about “Daddy-O” and sign copies of “Daddy-O’s Book of Big-Ass Art”, Bob Wade’s book chronicling his art.
